Footing on a computer, with three sample statements read into one ledger of 108 lines: the Guyana dollar account's July lines, each ticked and marked with the page and line it came from, beside the check, which says all 3 statements add up. July 2026 runs from 1,412,806.45 to 1,890,907.75, August 2026 from there to 2,789,007.60, and a US checking account's August from 2,846.53 to 3,995.53.
Footing on a phone, reading the three sample statements: the scanned July statement is done and adds up, with 35 lines; the August statement is on page 2 of 3, with the page's image, the lines being read marked on it, and the lines read so far listed below; the US statement waits its turn.
The sample statements. On the computer, every line in one list beside the check that each statement adds up, and on the phone, a statement being read page by page.

Footing reads months of bank statements from several accounts, downloaded or scanned, and lists every transaction in one Excel spreadsheet. Each line shows the date, the bank's own description, the money in and out, the running balance, a category, and the page and line it came from. A summary sheet gives the totals by category for each month.

Kinds of work: Excel and reporting, Automation

  • Every line is checked against the balances printed by the bank, and each statement has to run from its opening balance to its closing balance, to the cent.
  • When a figure does not match, Footing reads the page again. If it still does not, it tells you which page and line to look at, and holds back the spreadsheet until every statement agrees with the bank.
  • The spreadsheet keeps its sums as working formulas, including the running balance, the monthly totals by category, and a check sheet that adds everything up a second time.
